How to Cut Bangs (General)
It seems like every few weeks your bangs need to be trimmed. Who has time to go to the hairstylist that often? To save time and money, try trimming your own bangs. By following these simple steps, you won't end up butchering your hairstyle. Plus you can extend the time needed between haircuts.
Things You'll Need
· Sharp scissors
· Comb
· Mirror
Instructions
- Comb your bangs down straight over your forehead. Look in the mirror and decide how much you want to cut off.
2. Grab your bangs and twist them a few times. Hold the ends with the hand you won't be using to cut. Twisting will prevent you from having one straight line of bangs.
3. Take a deep breath and grab your scissors with the hand not holding your hair. While looking in the mirror, cut slightly below where you actually want your bangs cut. Remember that your bangs will bounce back a little after they are cut, so do not cut off too much. Cut straight across holding your bangs tightly until all the hair is cut.
4. Drop the cut hair in the garbage. You can use your blow dryer on low to blow off any loose hairs on your face or body.
5. Comb your bangs down straight. If you have any stray hairs that slipped out while cutting, cut them on an angle.
6. Shake your fingers lightly through your bangs to loosen them up so they will look more natural. If they are not short enough, repeat these steps.
7. This optional step is for the very brave. Once your bangs are the length you want, grab the scissors and hold them sharp side pointing up toward the ceiling. Place the scissors a fingertips length into your hair starting on the left. Carefully cut. Move the scissors every few inches to the right to give your bangs a choppy kind of look. You will be cutting very little hair. This will help your bangs separate a little more.
How to Cut Bettie Bang Fringe
There are a few advantages to learning how to cut cut bangs at home. Cutting bangs at home cuts down on the expense of having to visit a salon every few weeks, or monthly as bangs get shaggy. It's also convenient for those with busy schedules or young kids to be able to cut their own bangs, rather than having to fit into a hairdresser's schedule. Bettie bangs are a style of bangs made famous by Bettie Page in the 1950's.
Things You'll Need
- Sharp hair cutting scissors
- Comb
- Smock
- Bright lights
- Hairspray
Instructions
- Gather the comb, smock, scissors and other supplies. Make sure the bathroom is brightly lit and put on the smock to catch hair as it's cut. Comb bangs straight down. Bangs should always be dry when they're cut because hair shrinks as it dries and may be shorter than anticipated.
2. Use sharp haircutting scissors to cut bangs straight across. They will be shaped in the next step, but for now cut in a straight line from one side of the bangs to the next. Whatever length is desired is fine, but as a general rule, cut bangs to graze the eyebrows.
3. Use fingers or the comb to trace an angle from the outside edges of bang to the middle to get an idea of how short to cut the edges of bangs. The idea is going to be for bangs to be shorter on the outside edges and longer in the middle. Starting at one outside edge, cut bangs at an angle, getting longer in the area of the nose. Repeat the process at the other edge of bangs, ensuring that the length of the sides of bangs is the same and that the bangs gently curve to get longer in the middle.
4. Style Bettie bangs. Use a flat iron to gently curl bangs under. Spray with hairsprax to keep bangs in this shape.

How to Trim Bangs Between Haircuts
If you have a haircut with bangs, then you've probably experienced the frustration of overgrown bangs in between haircuts. While some stylists offer free bang trims in between cuts, you may want to try trimming your bangs by yourself.

1. Buy a pair of scissors in a beauty salon or store. Look for a pair of scissors that has short blades and pointed ends. Scissors with blades that are 5 1/2 to 6 1/2 inches in length are the best for trimming a haircut with bangs.
- Shampoo your hair and condition it with a leave-in conditioner. Initially, dry your bangs with a towel. Complete the drying process by drying hair with a blow dryer. Blow the bangs out straight
- Divide your bangs into three sections including a middle section and two side sections.
- Place the middle section of bangs between your horizontally placed index and middle fingers. Slowly and gently, draw your hand about halfway down the length of your bangs. Be careful to not overstretch the bangs or pull them too tight.
- Hold your scissors at 45-degree angle and start trimming your bangs. Move slowly, cutting off small pieces as you go.
- Repeat this process with the two side sections of hair, using the middle section as your guide to length.
